A few days ago I told you about our participation in the Camp LIFE to minister to Zambia orphans this summer. In that post I mentioned that there is more to the story of this week-long camp than just loving on some kids for a week. It is a week of transformation not just for the orphans there but for the Americans that show up.
The Rest of the Story
You can learn about all the various facets of Father’s Heart on the Family Legacy site and I will give you my take on it. First, a little history.
We learned of Family Legacy about a year ago as we were searching for a mission trip that we could take as a family in the sub continent of Africa. After reviewing multiple trips with multiple different organizations we decided on this one by way of some long time family friends that have made multiple trips to Zambia. The seed was planted probably 5 years ago when Renay overheard a conversation of the father of the family and some others while we were having a big lake gathering on July 4th. All she heard then was “something about Africa”, no details just that looking backward now God planting the seed for now.
So last year as we were waiting for this trip registration to open, we had multiple conversations between the 3 of us about what should we do now. We were sponsoring a child through Compassion – did we want to continue that or let it go and save the money to sponsor some of our kids we have yet to meet…or should we sponsor one of the current Camp LIFE kids that was in need? That is where we landed – a Camp LIFE child, her name is Angela Mpundu (girl a little younger than Hannah).
What Does Sponsorship Mean
First off every child that comes to Camp LIFE is eligible for sponsorship in the Father’s Heart Sponsorship ministry. If sponsored, then that child will have the opportunity to attend one of the Lifeway Christian Academy schools that are scattered throughout Lusaka and in the Tree of Life Village. Remember for every one American that goes to Camp LIFE, 10 orphans get to show up as well! So we not only will be ministering to and loving on these kids that are outcasts in their communities but we will be coming home with a deep understanding of their circumstance with the goal of getting each one sponsored through Father’s Heart.
Train a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not turn from it. – Proverbs 22:6
It is an opportunity to change the trajectory of their lives through education and discipleship training that is provided in addition to regular school work. Most if not all of these kids do not have the opportunity to go to school without this help. The Father’s Heart Sponsorship program is the next step of the whole process of changing Zambia one orphan at a time. It is a powerful program that is currently educating several thousands of children that did not have access until they are sponsored.
So now you know the second prong of the Family Legacy mission BUT there is more! We are so blessed and priviledged to be a small part of an organization that is making real changes in the country, not trying to get people out of the country. I hope you will share our story…
